CLASSES & RATES

A word about “SOCIALIZATION”. The critical window of development is from birth to 18 weeks of age. Missing these socialization opportunities can cause a puppy not only to be fearful, but not be able to cope with new situations without resorting to acting out, fooling around, fear, fear aggression, or even completely shutting down. Unfortunately not all dogs have had proper socialization. Many dogs are relinquished as teens because they missed proper socialization as pups. Understand there is a BIG difference between socialization, and exposure.

Three Common socialization MYTHS: 1) To socialize a dog you just have to put the dog into new situations. This is NOT socialization, this is called exposure. A dog must feel safe and in control when faced with a new situation. In our classes you learn what this means and how to train so your dog has fun and feels safe. MYTH : 2) Alone, the act of exposing a dog to fearful experiences will not automatically cause the dog to suddenly get beyond his fears. Behavior modification (changing how they feel about a situation in a humane way) is used to help a dog overcome his fears. The purpose of socialization is used to present the dog with new experiences in the hopes it prevents him from becoming fearful in the first place. Myth: 3) Assumption that if you fully immerse the dog into the fearful situation (called flooding) he will have no choice but to face his fears and he will be able to get past the fears. Not necessarily true. Think. If someone is afraid of snakes , is putting them in a room full of snakes going to be helpful in them getting over their fear of snakes? Uh, most likely will this not happen, it will make the fear worse. My classes are based on the current scientific knowledge of dog behavior. We do not use methods that if used on a human would be called assault. Your dog wants to please you, unless he is rewarded for getting it right he is just confused (not stubborn) and may resort to rambunctious behavior.

Best teen, young adolescent, teenager dog, older puppy class in Sequim, Port Angeles, Port Townsend.

Teenage Angst

Do you have a dog that chews your favorite shoes, jumps on people, ignores you around distractions, or randomly launches into a dramatic tantrum? Dogs between 6 months and 2 years old are canine adolescents (3yrs for some breeds!), and these teenage years are fraught with new and challenging behaviors. Taming your teen drama king or queen takes patience, consistency, and persistence. We will use positive training, games, obedience exercises, and simple management to prevent annoying teenage dog behaviors from becoming life-long bad habits.
